What’s new in Sumi.md.

Every version and what it brings you. Updates install in one click, from inside the app.

  1. 0.3.0

    Latest version

    Good to know before updating

    System

    • mdedit is now Sumi.md

The app takes its new name everywhere, in its windows and its menus. Your settings, your Workspaces, your open tabs and your snapshots are kept. In each Workspace, the hidden folder where Sumi.md keeps its data is renamed from .mdedit to .sumi: if you left it out of a sync or backup tool, leave out the new one too.

    • A new license

Sumi.md is no longer open source: from this version on, it comes under a license agreement, which you can read on the License page of this website. Versions up to 0.2.4 stay under the MIT License.

    New features

    Writing

    • Diagrams in the colours of your theme

Diagrams now take the colours of the theme you chose, instead of always staying light. They are drawn again as soon as you change the theme or switch between light and dark mode. Exported documents keep their diagrams in light colours.

    Files

    • Decided changes stay visible when merging

When a document changed both in Sumi.md and in another app, the merge window shows the two versions side by side. Until now, a change you had applied or ignored disappeared from view; it now stays marked by a thin, faded line of its colour, so you see what you decided without mistaking it for what is left to do.

    Improvements

    Files

    • Your edits are kept when a document cannot be saved

If a document cannot be saved, for example because the disk is full, another app locks the file or a drive was unplugged, Sumi.md now tells you why, with a Try again button, keeps your edits and tries again on its own. Until now, the failure went unnoticed, and closing the tab could lose your edits. A window with edits it cannot save no longer closes: it lists the documents concerned, and offers Close without saving.

    Interface

    • Open a Workspace

The Open a folder command is now called Open a Workspace, in the menu, the command palette and the welcome screen. On a Mac, the File menu is gone: Open a Workspace… is in the Sumi.md menu, below Settings…, and New window is at the top of the Window menu.

    • A fully translated French interface

The French interface no longer leaves terms in English: a Workspace is now an espace de travail, an asset a ressource and a snapshot an instantané.

    • A cleaner look for notifications and dialogs

Notifications, dialog titles and lists now follow your theme and text size, with a cleaner look: the templates manager, the export, broken links and comparison dialogs, the command palette and the merge window. Code blocks, callouts and tables now follow the zoom of the document.

    System

    • Quitting saves your edits first

Quitting Sumi.md, and restarting it to install an update, now save every open document first, even the edits of the last few seconds. If one cannot be saved, Sumi.md stays open and tells you, with Quit without saving to leave anyway; an update then waits until your documents are saved.

    • More stable, and smoother with large folders

A problem while showing a document now stays inside its tab: the tab says the document cannot be shown and offers Try again and Show in Source Mode, while your other tabs keep working. A document that could not be opened can be tried again from its tab. Large Workspaces and slow or network drives no longer freeze the window, typing in long documents is smoother, and replacing many matches at once is much faster.

    Fixes

    Files

    • Saving keeps the permissions of a file

On Mac and Linux, saving a document made its file readable by you alone. It now keeps the permissions it had, so the people and apps that could read it still can.

    Interface

    • Dark themes are readable everywhere

In dark themes, comparison views drew changes in a light red and green, and the text of notifications could hardly be read: they now take the colours of the theme. Checkboxes, radio buttons and sliders take the accent colour of the theme too.

    System

    • Sumi.md starts reliably

A document whose properties at the top had an unclosed quote ending with a backslash could make Sumi.md close at every start. Settings that could not be read left an empty window: Sumi.md now starts with its default settings, tells you, and keeps the unreadable file aside.

  2. 0.2.4

    Good to know before updating

    System

    • Intel Macs no longer receive updates

Sumi.md is now built only for Macs with an Apple chip (M1 and later). On a Mac with an Intel processor, the version already installed keeps working, but no longer receives updates.

    New features

    Files

    • Images, videos, audio files and PDFs in a tab

You can now open an image, a video, an audio file or a PDF right in Sumi.md: click it in the sidebar and it opens in a tab, like a document. Images fit the window or show at their actual size, videos and audio files play with their controls, and PDFs show in a viewer, or open in your computer’s default app when the viewer is not available.

    • Add any kind of file to a document

Until now, only images could be pasted or dropped into a document. You can now paste or drop any file, from your computer or from another folder open in Sumi.md: it is copied into the document’s assets folder, and a link to it is added to the text. Files over 50 MB are refused, with a message.

    • Drag a file into a document to link it

Drag a file from the sidebar into the text of a document: a link to it is added where you drop it. A document is linked by its title, an image shows right in the text, and other files are linked by their name.

    • Drag a file to open it side by side

Drag a file from the sidebar towards an edge of an open document: it opens in a new pane on that side, so you can see both at once. Dropped on a tab, it opens in the same pane as that tab.

    Interface

    • A menu bar

File and Help menus now sit at the top of the window, on every screen, even with the sidebar hidden. File opens a folder, a new window or the settings; Help checks for updates and shows the version installed. On a Mac, these menus join the menu bar at the top of the screen, in the language of the app.

    • Sidebar options

A new button at the top right of the sidebar opens its options: show all files, expand or collapse every open folder at once, and keep only one folder expanded at a time, the others collapsing as soon as you expand one. Handy when several folders are open in the same window.

    System

    • Check for updates at any time

Until now, Sumi.md only looked for updates when it started. You can now check whenever you like, from the Help menu, then “Check for updates…”: Sumi.md tells you whether a new version is available, whether you already have the latest one, or whether the check failed.

    Improvements

    Files

    • Every file shows in the sidebar

The “Show all files” option is now on from the start: the sidebar lists every file of the folder, not only your documents. Each file has an icon for its type (document, image, video, audio, PDF, code, archive…). Those Sumi.md cannot open are greyed out, but you can still rename, move or drag them. To see only your documents, turn the option off in the sidebar options.

    Removed

    Interface

    • The “Open a folder” button at the bottom of the sidebar

The bottom of the sidebar and its “Open a folder” button are gone. To open a folder, use the File menu, then “Open a folder…”.

    • The split buttons of the tab bar

The buttons that split the window from the tab bar are gone. To see two documents side by side, right-click a tab and choose “Split right” or “Split down”, or drag the tab towards an edge of the window.
